One of the town’s most notable landmarks is the Oak Ridge Military Academy, founded in 1852. As the third-oldest military school in the nation still in operation, it holds the distinction of being North Carolina’s official military school. The academy, along with the Oak Ridge Historic District, showcases the town’s commitment to preserving its rich heritage.
Since its incorporation, Oak Ridge has experienced significant growth. The population increased from 3,988 in 2000 to an estimated 7,049 by 2019. This growth has been accompanied by the development of upper-class housing and shopping centers, particularly along the NC 68 corridor near the military academy.
Geographically, the town spans approximately 16.58 square miles, with a small percentage of water bodies. It is strategically located 15 miles northwest of Greensboro and is bordered by Stokesdale, Summerfield, and Kernersville. Major highways like NC 68 and NC 150 provide easy access to neighboring cities and the Piedmont Triad International Airport, just five miles south of the town center.
Community events have long been a staple in Oak Ridge. From 1945 to 2013, the town hosted a popular horse show every Easter weekend, reflecting its deep-rooted traditions. Today, residents continue to engage in various local events and activities that foster a strong sense of community.
